Growing up as a testy little kid who often wanted to have the last word, I was often told by my parents, “WATCH YOUR MOUTH!” In my developmental years, “WATCH YOUR MOUTH” was used as a reminder for me to stay within the communication boundaries of discipline, respect, honesty, and positivity established by my parents.
As adults, we're able to take many of the lessons of our developmental years and build upon them. For me, "Watch Your Mouth" is one of those statements. We are usually vigilant about what goes into our mouth's, but often overlook the power our words have over our lives and those we lead. Words are an integral part of our lives and for leaders, they greatly impact the organizational and team culture.
If you are business owner, executive, manager, leader in an organization or simply someone with influence over others, here are a few things to think about:
Handle words worth extreme care, they will either inflame dissent or inspire confidence.
Remind yourself that learning "to talk" is different from learning "how to communicate."
The words we use are often cues we are taking from the words we hear within ourselves.
If you haven't dieted before, perhaps now is a good time to start "The Language Diet", you will likely find a more healthy organizational and team culture as a result!
BE AUDACIOUS, BE AUTHENTIC, BE AWESOME!
