Living in our world is quite interesting and if one is not careful, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with work, family and just life in general. One option is choosing to become self-focused or we can begin to think bigger about the moment. How can we think bigger about a moment when the moment seems so arduous? Consider this, there is a phenomenon called the “butterfly effect” that essentially says, "a butterfly flapping his wings can create tiny changes in the atmosphere.” This occurs because the small input in the initial conditions create a chain reaction in the larger phenomenon that is occurring.

Take Richard Montanez, who started his PepsiCo career at Frito-Lay, in 1976, as a janitor in its Rancho Cucamonga plant. His life changed after Richard heard a video message sent out by the president of the company. In the message, the president told his employees to act like an owner. He remembered, “I looked around and didn’t see a lot of reaction from my co-workers, but for me it was the opportunity to do something different.” Today Richard is recognized as the creator of the Flamin' Hot line of products including Flamin' Hot Cheetos, which influenced future ethnic products. Together with his wife, the Montanez give back to their community by granting college scholarships to Latinos and donating food, clothing, school supplies and other services to the needy as part of Kits for Kids and Feed the Children.

What made Richard an "change agent?” He started flapping his wings as a janitor, while keeping vigilant of the world around him.

It is not necessary for you to go global to change the world to be considered a world changer; it is only necessary that you begin flapping your wings where you are to make a difference. You change the course of the world by having a social consciousness about your business, raising your children, living in integrity or simply being compassionate toward others. I am certain this phenomenon is not known by the butterfly and yet he still flaps his wings. Now that you know, what input will you provide to impact your circumstances and change the world around you?

Happy Flapping,
